Infrastructure

Our seafood and aquaculture sector thrives due to an integrated system of infrastructure based around Bluff and Stewart Island.

South Port

Located in Bluff Harbour, at the southern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, South Port is New Zealand’s southernmost commercial deepwater port.

From its’ base on the 40ha man-made Island Harbour, South Port is proud to provide a full range of marine services, cargo and container shipping, and on-site warehousing for domestic and international customers.

The port is ideally situated to service Southland’s significant export and import industries including aluminium, timber, fisheries, dairy, meat, wood chips, stock food, cement, alumina, fertiliser and petroleum products.

South Port prides itself on adding value to its import and export customers, providing customised solutions to meet their needs and partnering with them to achieve their operational objectives.

Haul Out Facilities

The region has a range of haulout and vessel cleaning facilities to meet the needs of different sized vessels.

Dry dock sheds are also available for repairs, blasting and painting. The syncrolift dry dock at South Port is situated at the Island Harbour at Bluff.

The main dimensions of its lifting platform are:

  • Length: 40.26m

  • Beam: 13.4m

  • Draft: 6.0m

  • Displacement Capacity: 1050 tonnes

Invercargill Airport

New Zealand’s southernmost airport is only 3km from Invercargill’s city centre and 28km from South Port in Bluff.

Regular air transport services provide connections to all main airports including scheduled direct flights to Auckland and Christchurch (operated by Air New Zealand), Stewart Island (operated by Stewart Island Flights) and regular national and international charter flights.

The airport is certified to accommodate small private international passenger flights and customs inspection, and quarantine areas can be made available by prior arrangement.

Invercargill Airport has recently announced a $4 million upgrade to its Sir Tim Shadbolt Terminal to meet modern aviation standards. While this is a compliance-driven functional upgrade, Invercargill Airport believes that it’s also an unmistakable indicator of Southland’s momentum. This redevelopment affirms confidence in the region’s growth and ensures Invercargill Airport can continue to connect Southlanders and businesses with Aotearoa and the world.

Port Otago

Port Otago is New Zealand’s “always open” port.

They are the lower South Island’s primary export port, providing a safe and efficient gateway to and from the world for our customers. Their kaimahi take pride in their customer service and careful cargo handling.
